What is a Lip Injection?
A lip injection is a minimally invasive treatment that plumps the lips and removes lines and wrinkles around the mouth. Providers can perform it using two different techniques. The first is using dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm® Ultra and Juvéderm® Volbella. These products use a unique formula that includes hyaluronic acid, making the results indistinguishable from natural skin volume. Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in the body and helps the skin retain moisture for long-term results. Another option is fat transfer and injections. This involves taking fat from the patient’s body and re-injecting it into the lip area. This typically lasts longer than dermal fillers because the fat isn’t broken down and absorbed like the ingredients in most injectables.

How is a Lip Injection Administered?
Your lip injection treatment will depend on the method used. Juvéderm® treatments are straightforward and involve carefully placed injections administered by Dr. Anh Vu. This is a comfortable process, although we can provide a topical anesthetic if the patient is concerned about discomfort. If we use the fat transfer method, treatment starts with collecting fat from an area like the abdomen or thighs that has excess fatty tissue. Then, the fat is purified and re-injected into the body. The injection process is very similar to that of Juvéderm® and other fillers.
What Can I Expect After My Lip Injection?
Lip injection treatments can cause mild swelling or redness around the injection areas. This typically fades within a few days. No downtime is required after lip injections, and patients can resume normal activities immediately after leaving their appointment. The results from both Juvéderm® and fat grafting can last up to two years or longer.
